Internal Arts has many perceived definitions. How do the internal arts relate to health?

So, this is a question that has plagued the martial arts for...well, forever. As much as has been written about the internal arts, there is still a great deal of confusion, disagreement, secrecy, and outright negativity about this subject. To make things simple, as far as health or illness is concerned, the body has certain characteristics that Western and Eastern medicine both recognize, but to different degrees. In the West, the focus is on dealing with symptoms and medicating towards ease of those symptoms; in the East the desire is to get to the cause of the symptoms and change the part of one's life that brings those symptoms about. Really, the two views are not so different.
